There isn't a single definition of the term 'high-definition' that's used. But it has to do with pixels.
If you look REALLY close at your TV or computer screen, you should probably be able to see a bunch of dots. That's what your picture is made up of. Any particular dot (called a pixel) can only be one colour and on or off. So the more pixels you can cram into a smaller space, the more realistic and the less dotty your picture appears.
Once you get past a certain point, the (very) clear picture begins to get called 'high-definition' (abbreviated HD, like a HDTV). But like I said above, exactly where that point is located is not completely agreed on. Suffice it to say that HD images are clearer and better-looking in a general sense than non-HD ones. Generally.
So the PS3 has a REALLY advanced computer system inside it which is capable of controlling lots and lots of pixels at once. It is capable of an HD picture. But that's really only half of the equation, though. Because you ALSO need an HDTV in order to SEE the HD picture - it doesn't matter HOW many pixels a computer can control if your TV simply doesn't have enough to show them all!
This is why the HD feature of the PS3 is a sort of mixed blessing. Most people, even in America and Japan, do not have an HDTV. So all the high-end graphics are meaningless. Likewise, unless a game is instructing the PS3 to use all it's computer power and make HD images, that power is also meaningless. So a PS3 will be great for those few (rich) people who have expensive TVs, buy the few expensive games that makes use of such graphics, and enjoy them enough to play them regularly.
For everyone else, the HD feature is pointless. Even Sony admits this. They're betting, however, that the technology will become so commonplace that in a few years everyone will have it. I guess we'll just have to see if they're right!

The graphics are better (as long as the TV is high definition).
Look up close at yo TV, you see those tiny dots? If you get a high def. TV those dots will be less visible.

ok, so the ps3 has way better graphics, meaning that when you look at the game in ps2, you can see alot of lumps and bumps in the gameplay, but in the ps3, it will look like a movie, because it will be alot clearer

It's the same difference between regular TV and HDTV.
Why didn't you just ask him while you were at it?
Edit: And why should guys know more? Are you trying to be sexist?
