I got some "old-school" advice from someone this past weekend that the best way to clear my 1-year old son's stuffy nose is to blow in his mouth. This person said that the air blown in his mouth will in turn force the mucous to come out of his nose. I'm a littly wary abou this. It seems that I may damage his little lungs in some way by doing this. I really hate to see him all stuffed up and I've tried every cold remedy imaginable including saline drops, medications, suction, and warm vapors. Nothing works! This lady swore by this method and she is currently raising four grandchildren (which I assume she has used this method on) and they seem to be doing fine. Does anyone know if this actually works?

No, this will not work. Try, as others have said, to use menthol rub like vicks. A stuffy nose is uncomfortable, but it will not last forever. It's probably worse on you.

If you just cant take it......Boil 1 cup of water. Dissolve 1/4 tsp. table salt, + 1/4 tsp. baking soda in the sterilized water. Cover and let it cool to room temperature. Take an eye dropper and place 1-2 drops in each nostril. Try sucking the drops (and what ever boogers you can) out with a nasal aspirator.

This will make baby cry VERY hard. He will hate it. He may cough, and sneeze. But it is the only remedy that I have found that is safe and works. Some say that Cool mist vapor works....Not in my experience.

IF you REALLY cant stand it. Try some PediaCare product with decongestant. I personally do not like to give my kids medicines like this unless it is absolutely necessary.

No, blowing in a baby's mouth is a good way of collasping it's lungs. Saline drops, suction and warm moist vapors work. When in doubt, call the pediatrician!

i havent tried that with the stuffy nose but i do know when you blow into their mouth when they are crying it will make them breathe in, have you tried those vicks plug in things?? have you tried cool vapor? you have to use these things for about a week before you see any results, but i find that clariten children works great, and also a very small amount of dayquill... clears them right up....

No. It could force air into their stomach, which is dangerous. Or it could force air into the lungs, which could be too much.

It's just a cold. Some TLC, and the remedies you mentioned above will tide you through till the cold is over.

That sounds like a terrible idea. A woman who is raising her grandchildren makes me think she didn't do such a hot job the first time around, or why wouldn't these kids be with their parents? Call your pediatrician.

You should not blow into a baby's mouth. Take him to the pediatrician and tell him what meds you have used and let him decide what is best. Blowing in anyone's mouth spreads germs and if you are talking about blowing in his mouth like in performing CPR it is dangerous.

I would never blow in a child mouth unless it was for cpr!
They have these great bulb extracters just for this you can buy at any drugstore and it really helps take the mucas out so baby can breath better...

It may work, but an effective way to clear a runny nose is to get a small eyedropper ( I'm not sure about what they are called but they are a smaller version of a turkey baster) place the dropper near the nostril and suck it out.
