I think the President has nominated a good person for the job, whether Congress will approve him is another question to be answered soon. Gates experience in the CIA may be beneficial when it comes to coordinating with the CIA and FBI. If our Military and our civilian agencies can work more effectively together, we have a much better chance at fighting terrorism. Unlike some i believe Rumsfeld was a very effective Sec. except for sending too few troops into Iraq at the onset.

I think it will be more of the same. He's just as much a crony of Bush's as was Rumsfeld. The only cool part, really, is that enough people were outraged by Rumsfeld that Bush had to do something to try and save face for the GOP. Finally, he pushed us and we pushed back! I bet the troops in Iraq are thrilled, as well.

He has a lot of experience in national security post's so I think he will bring about some pleasant change, Rumsfeld was a Great peace time sec of defense, but war time was just too much for him to handle.

Another crony. Why is this idiot allowed to pick his best friends as top military advisors? A government run on favors and friendships, not ability, would be a joke if it weren't the future of a free world at stake.

hes Ex-cia and knows nothing about the dept of defense so he will hopefully let the generals do the job they have trained most of thier lives to do and not interfere like rumsfield liked to do.
