Be kind to yourself...be yourself. Being other than yourself is stressful, in the long run it wears you down.

Mostly that depends on what the cool people are doing, and where you fit in their world. If, for example, they are all wealthy and you are not, then you cannot do what they do. If they are all sports addicts and you are not, then that's the same problem.
Where do you cross their sight line? Are you smarter than any of them? Faster in any thing than some/most of them?
Are you sure that they are the cool ones? How do you define "cool"? Do your current friends, the ones you have known since early grade school, belong to the "cool" group?
I believe, having survived high school and college, that it is important to have true, ordinary, connected friends that I am proud to bring to my house, and who are proud to bring me to their house.
If you can't bring them home, or they can't/won't bring you home, trust is hard to build on that foundation. Your mother and dad have to like them, just as THEIR mother and dad have to like you.
Ask your brother or sister how they survived either being or not being "cool".
Then ask you mother what her 15 or 20 year reunion was like? Ask particularly about her "cool" crowd.
It's hard being outside a group that you want to join. Growing up is learning where and how you fit into the world. You can do anything you want, except make people like you it they don't want to. Find the ones who want you, and hold them close.

I have found that when I am trying to do what the "cool" people are doing that I just get in trouble. I think it is way more important to be myself.

Be yourself. Don't worry about fads or how others feel about things, do what you feel is right for you. You will know when you are doing the right thing when it feels right. There is no point in living your life by other peoples standards, it just makes you miserable and keeps the cookie cutter people coming....

Cool people are cool, b'cas they are their own self. Whether its for joy or anything else...love your self, be who you really are and just ignore anything others' say to make your otherwise. Being true to yourself, will show you as a cool person to others!
