I'm 21 yrs old. I was on depo for a little over a year and went off of it. I had little to no period, no weight gain, no mood swings. The only thing that happened in that year is that I began bleeding during intercourse one time, luckily my bf was cool and understood what was going on. I went off of it for about a year seeing as though I wasn't getting no sex. Now I have been on it for nearly 6 mos and am experiencing some spotting and/bleeding. It happens whenever it wants to w/o warning sometimes occuring during physical exertion ie exercising, after intercourse, even sometimes when aroused. Has this happened to anyone? My doctor says it's just a coincidednce. I have had a pelvic exam and been tested for std's and everything has checked out a - okay. I would just like to know if this has happened to anyone else or should I ask a doctor for a fourth opinion (because Ive already asked 3 doctors) Also, I have tried all other forms of bc. and I dont trust condoms alone. HELP!!

Okay, I and My sister-in-law(Age 18 and 21) was on the Depo Shot. I was on it for 6 months and she was on it about little over a year. We both think that it isn't the best form of Birth Control(BC) Because we both are having problems from it. Myself has a cyst on my ovrys from it. I had no period the whole time i was on it. Now i have my period ALL THE TIME. Last month I had it for 3 weeks then 8 days later i was on it for a week. I also was like you i started bleeding during intercourse. So in my oppion GET OFF OF IT.

Talk to your Doctor about whether you're a candidate for the copper IUD.

Taking hormones for a long period of time is not a good thing. Depo Provera is akin to forcing your body into an early menopausal state and your body freaks out.

Clinics like Planned Parenthood love the stuff because it's a no thought birth control process as long as you show up for the shot, but it is really bad for a lot of women. There are other options for women that don't want to have to think about birth control, so ask and be persistent.

I've been off the Depo Provera since 2000 and my hair still hasn't grown all the way back. I lost about a 1/4 inch along most of my front hair line. The rest of my hair came back and is thick and strong, but the hairline is not the same compared to what it was. In addition to the hair loss, I gained over 40 pounds, 20 while taking Depo and 20 after coming off. I never had a migraine before Depo and during use and for the first year after being off it, I had severe migraines at least once a week. My skin itched like I wanted to rip it off and I was hot all the time. I would get extreme vertigo with no warning. Just try staggering at work or while in the pharmacy and not look like you had a drinking problem! My bones also ached a lot. Depo has been proven to cause osteoporosis. Over a year after coming off the Depo Provera, I developed two serious blood clots one after the other. The cause was never completely determined because I had not been on birth control of any kind for over a year and my blood tests were normal. I finally had a rib removed and the clots stopped, but I will contend to this day the Depo had at least a little something to do with it. About the same time as the blood clots, I started having severe cramping and a year into it, my doctor found pretty severe endometriosis. With the resulting depression and the lack of sex from Depo you may not have to worry about getting pregnant because you won't want to have sex anyway. I know some people do just fine with this birth control, but it's not worth the chance. It takes upwards of 6 to 8 months for the effects to wear off and sometimes longer. My hair has never grown completely back along the hairline and I am having a hair transplant at a tune of $5,000.00 to fix it. I am only 35! I can't wait until Depo is researched more deeply and to someday find out what else this drug did to screw up my system.

I got the (copper) IUD (since I can't use hormones anymore due to future clotting risks). My insurance paid for it. You still get your period, but it's worth it.

Our bodies are made to have periods unless we are pregnant. If you force your body into an unnatural state, it WILL fight back!

I was on it for 2 years--I don't trust condoms alone either--and I lost my period altogether and then started having panic attacks and depression. The doctors didn't tell me this but I found out from personal experienc and from my new doctor that Depo does cause depression and other problems. I got off the Depo and the depression went away shortly thereafter. I agree with the first poster. Depo can be really bad news and not the best choice for BC. Talk to your doctor about other BC options--IUD, BC pills, etc.

I'm a nurse practitioner at a family planning clinic. I have girls coming in freq c/o freq irregular bleeding. This is normal with depo provera in the first year of use. It will get better with time. Getting your next injection as soon as possible and starting a daily dose of NSAIDs (advil, motrin, aleve) will help
