Good questions that would start up a long, thought out conversation? I'm trying to get someone to be more open with themself and talk more, I need some questions or something to bring up that would make them say something besides "Yes", "No", or "I don't know"

Well it depends on their age. See if you can find their "hot spot" like a hobby or a passion they hold.

Possible things to talk about

-Work
-School
-Family/parents/significant other etc.

Don't ask close ended questions. Ask things like "how would that make you feel?" or "What do you think of that idea". Be patient and give them time to answer...be silent...even if it's awkward silence...but pause and WAIT for their answer.

If you have some interest that the 2 of you share in common that is the best place to start.

ask what their favorite movies are, or you could ask what kind of music they like, their opinion when it comes to politics, if they like amusement parks, any hobbies, do they like sports???? the topics are endless, the key is to pay attention to what they like and play off of those things.
