earlier today i was shopping in my local town, when a women and two men started walking up the road with a staffordshire puppy about 6 months, the guy holding the puppy on the lead started kicking it in the head and then swung it up in the air, shouting and swearing, it was apparant that they were drunk or on drugs.........this was in a busy town centre with men and women walking past, not one person intervened......except for me.........I said that he should stop doing that or i will call the police, the other guy looked a bit worried, and said stop doing that to the guy, but the they both looked at me and started shouting and screaming at me......again no one intervened.......so then i phoned the police and told them. I cant believe that into days society, that someone would be that blatently cruel towards a dog, and if thats what he was doing in public, imagine what he does at home...............what would you have done??? I feel i should have done more !!

Good for you for sticking up for the little puppy. You at least did SOMETHING but I'd look up to see what other action you could have taken for future reference. Ever read the story of James Bulger? It's horrible but a story where a little 2 year old boy was beaten in public and eventually killed and NOBODY said anything. Read it on crimelibrary.com.

I think you did the right thing. I hope the dog got taken away, poor puppy. I think it's horrible nobody else stopped to do anything yet I'm not surprised. In today's society it's become about not getting involved with other people's business. Which in some cases can be horrible. Sometimes people just need to step in so somebody doesn't get away with a crime. Sure, maybe you could have done more, maybe not. The important thing is you did and hopefully those men will think twice about it.

I faced similar confusion one day at my high school campus. Keep in mind, this is a huge school, over 10,000 students, so you could understand my surprise. A few friends and I were chatting during lunch break, walking down the north end of our school. This is the most crowded area of the school, and there's a big mall, office and apartement buildings surronding it. As we were talking, we saw a man in his 30's coming out of his car, dragging the cutest little golden retriever puppy by the leash. The dog sat down, frightened, and the man kicked him...hard. He started screaming at the poor little thing, yanking on the leash and smacking it-- not lightly, as you would do to train it, but full on smacking, no restrains. I was shocked that no other student but myself and my friends noticed. My boyfriend, who was with us at the time, went up to the man and told him to stop, and the man grabbed him by the neck and told him to mind his own buisness. We went to get the dean, and everything was sorted out. Trust me, you did as much (and more) than many people would've done...just adressing the situation deserves recognition!

Probably the same thing you did. I don't know what state you live in or if the police were able to do anything but hopefully they take the dog away. Animal cruelty is only illegal in some states unfortunately. It should be in all of them. Thats just plain sad.

I would have called cops followed them. Get some sort of address or vehicle identification. Given a full report to an officer of the law and possibly one day they would have been prosecuted.
YOU DID THE RIGHT THING TO INTERVENE.
If this wasn't the US....I probably would have kicked him in the head!

I would have called the police first, then I would have asked him if the dog needed a home. I would have offered him money to buy it, and gotten it a good home.
When cops arrive, I would request to take the dog.
Most important get the dog. You can't change the owner.

Well done for making a stand, I think you did as much as you could without putting yourself in danger if they were that out of it. You have to wonder though if all those who stood around and did nothing would have acted the same if it had been a child !

You did the right thing. At least you will be able to sleep peacefully tonight because you know you did do at least something. I'm not sure what else you could have done legally
and without getting injured.

You did the right thing. The question is, who let them have this dog, and do they have kids at home that they treat equally as badly?

You have done whatever you can. Maybe you should have called the SPCA and notify them about this couple.
