I will tell you straight up with both of my kids I refused to get the epidural, but don't take this the wrong way I know of some people who swear by it. I watch t.v also I took walks in the hospital I probably knew the whole hospital by the time I had the baby. Also I ordered food when I was hungry, but if you can also taking naps aren't going to hurt you. That is what I should of done. Go and look at the other babies the key things is to try to take your mind off of labor and put it on something else even a good book can be of any help. Have visitors because the doctors will have them leave when you are about ready to push.

You can use a hot pad or have some one massage where it hurts. It is really hard to relax during labor pains. I would have to suggest that if you want to do it natural, then always breath. Have a focus point and breath and focus on your breath.

Put a picture of you and your man in the room as a Focus point, or make a mix tape of your favorite songs, just to be honest I have had 2 boys and the excitement of labor will keep you active, you wont concentrate on anything really except getting your baby out so you can see and hold him or her

When I was in labor with my youngest son I sat on the toilet for a long period of time, don't know why but it must have been the way my body was positioned. Maybe a exercise ball would be a suggestion to. Seems that if you are sitting in a upright possition with your legs spread apart it really helps.

Take in things that comfort you. Breathing exercises help some people. Some hospitals will allow you to bring in music to listen to. That can really help because you can focus on the lyrics rather than the pain. Whatever you do, just try to find something else to focus on other than the pain. Having a partner count out your contractions can be very helpful because then you can see an end in sight. Have you taken lamaze classes?

you can try breathing exercises, meditation, walking, but the only way i found to relax was to get the freaking epidural! this is not a sell-out - if you are in major pain, adrenaline is released, and this actually puts stress on your baby (as well as you). if you are able to stay relaxed with natural methods, good for you, but don't be a hero.

I used nitrous oxide - laughing gas - for one of my deliveries. The other 2 were all natural - not because I am stoic or anything but because those 2 babies came so fast there was no time.
Back to the gas - I don't know that it took the edge off the pain but it gave me something to focus on and kept me breathing rythmically.

With 2 of my children I did it natural....my hubby rubbed my back to help me to relax. With my 3 child I had the Epidural....and that was even better.
Best of luck to you.

I walk. Once it becomes too difficult to walk I would ask for a rocking chair and sit. Talking to people helps. Hot showers. Also books/Tv/Card games/Crossword puzzles. Good luck!
