i have family coming over for thanksgiving....lots of them. i stay at home with our 2 babies while my husband works (military), so you can imagine that we have to squeeze every penny. we cant afford to buy groceries for all the family thats going to be here (they will be here for 3 or 4 days). i dont want to over complicate anything either (i.e. asking everyone to splt everything down to the penny evertime i go to the store, etc...) any advice on what to do?

Just be honest and tell them you are looking forward to having them but that you will need some help with the expenses of feeding everyone. They should understand and not feel bad about it.

Can you ask them all to bring a dish to pass for Thanksgiving? That will ease up the costs. Maybe get an extra big turkey so that you can have plenty of leftovers. Everyone loves leftover turkey. Then get creative (search the Internet) for recipes for soups and other ways to extend the leftovers. It may be a good idea to start buying some non-perishable items ahead. There are lots of things that you can make on a limited budget, spaghetti, stews, crock pot items, casseroles. Do some searching and see what you can come up with. Good luck!

I hope they will go to the grocery some for you or at least give you some money. Probably Thanksgiving dinner will be the main big meal you'll have. Try to serve casseroles and pasta dishes so you won't have to buy too much meat. Serve sandwiches part of the time. Go to Kroger with your coupons if there is one near. I think they still double them.

Maybe you could ask everyone to bring something, like a pot-luck. I bet they won't all be expecting to sponge off of you for four days, hopefully they will be considerate enough offer something anyway.

Ask your family for support. There is nothing wrong with that. Don't let pride get in the way.

Be honest. Tell them the miitary STILL pays crap wages and you appreciate any help you can get with the holiday expenses.

since I'm a strong believer in the power of words, my main advice is to change your phrase from saying "I'm broke" to "I am temporarily low on funds."

one would be amazed at the power of words (if they really pay attention to the details of their life)....

ask, and u shall receive.
