I would like your opinion on these questions. We are reading one of the classics. The Great Gatsby. And one of my "tutorees" is having a difficult time expanding his mind and giving me his opinion on the questions. so I said all of that to say this, I need to know what you all think about these questions. brainstorm if you'd like .

1. What does Nick's Midwestern background reveal about him?

2.What kind of man is Tom? What is the significance of the book he is reading?

3. What characteristics do you assign to Daisy? Why does she want her daughter to be "a beautiful fool"?

1. Nick's midwestern background represents a more morally upright America and more traditional values and treatment of other people. They are presented as more down-to-earth than the east coasters.

2. Tom represents old money and the old way of thinking, with his biggotry and racist attitudes. He is also the jock who never grew up. I think we all know someone like that.

3. I think Daisy would want her daughter to be a "beautiful fool" because she is the type who would consider ignorance to be bliss in all things and it would be easier to get by in life on looks and not really on brains. She is definately self-centered and shallow.

I think it's all meaningless, but maybe it is an Extremely Conspicuous Clue. Barack Obama would be the best choice then. After all, King Hussein of Jordan was one of the strongest allies the US has had in the Middle East.
