John Wilkes Booth was not prosecuted for the murder of Lincoln
he died before he could be charged.
Union soldiers, lead by Lieutenant E. P. Doherty, pursued Booth through Southern Maryland and across the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers to Richard Garrett's farm, near Bowling Green, Virginia. He had been housed in the barn with the assistance of Captain Willie Jett, of Mosby's Command. Early in the morning of April 26, 1865, the soldiers caught up with Booth. Trapped in a tobacco barn owned by Richard H. Garrett. Booth refused to surrender and Everton Conger ordered the soldiers to set the barn ablaze. Sergeant Boston Corbett, against orders, fired at Booth and fatally wounded him in the neck. Booth was dragged from the fire and he died on the porch of the farmhouse. The bullet had severed his spinal cord and he was paralyzed. His last words were spoken as he stared at his hands and reportedly muttered, "Tell my mother I died for my country... useless... useless..."

Seven men and one woman were arrested as accomplices to Booth. Herold, Paine, and Atzerodt were the most active accomplices and were sentenced to death by hanging. O’Laughlin, Arnold, Dr. Mudd were unjustly accused with helping plan the murder, but got life sentences. Edman Spangler got six years and Mary Surratt was sentenced to death for having Booth’s riffle waiting for him that night. On July 7, the three men and one woman were hung.

Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater.
He originally planned to kidnap him, but certain probles occured.
Booth enjoyed theaters (as he was a very popular actor).
Booth thought that by killing Lincoln, he would give the south a boost to beat the north after the Civil War.

Booth was shot (against orders) when soldiers met up with him, he never was sentenced.

John Wilkes Booth; he shot Lincoln in the back of the head. I believe it was while Lincoln was watching a play with his wife. It has been a long time since I have read up on this and also been in school.

Go on the internet and just look up Lincoln or Booth. I am not sure if that is how you spell the middle name of Booth, could be Wilks.
