6 = 5y - 44
-5y + 6 = -44
-5y = -50
y = -50/-5
y = 10

so y is equal to 10

To solve the equation

6 + 2y = 7y - 44

Perform the same operation (add, subtract, multiply or divide) to each side of the equation until you get the form

variable = number

6 + 2y - 7y = 7y - 44 - 7y {subtract 7y}
6 - 5y = - 44 {combine like terms}
6 - 5y - 6 = - 44 - 6 {subtract 6}
-5y = - 50
y = 10 {divide by -5}

6 + 2y = 7y - 44
6=5y-44
50=5y
10=y
y=10

First, add 44 to both sides:
6+44+2y=7y-44+44
As you can see, the (-44) and the (+44) cancel each other out, leaving you with:
50+2y=7y.
Now, subtract 2y from both sides:
50+2y-2y=7y-2y
The (+2y) and the (-2y) cancel each other out. You do this because you want to single out all your variables on one side. You'd get:
50=5y
Divide everything by 5:
50/5=5y/5
Because the five in 5y and the 5 in the denominator cancel out to create one, you would have singled out the variable, y:
10=1y, or 10=y since the (1) is already implied.

The order of operations says "PEMDAS." When solving for equations, it becomes "SADMEP." You do the opposite thing in the opposite order to "cancel" out numbers and variables.

here is the problem worked out:
6+2y=7y-44
-2y -2y
6=5y-44
+44 +44
50=5
(divided by 5 on both sides) *therefore y=10

6+2y=7y-44
-2y -2y Subtract 2y from both sides
6=5y-44
+44 +44 Add 44 to both sides
50=5y
/5 /5 Divide both sides by 5
10=y or y=10

6 + 2y = 7y - 44
It's NOT as hard as it looks...
Get the same type of #s on separate sides of the equal sign...
WHATEVER you do to 1 side, do the SAME to the other...

Add 44 to both sides... 44+6+2y=7y-44(+44)
This leaves 50+2y=7y...

Subtract 2y from both sides... 50+2y-2y=7y-2y
This leaves 50=5y

Divide both sides by 5... 50/5=5y/5
This leaves 10=y

Now, check to make sure by substituting 10 for y in the original equation and both sides should equal each other...

6+2(10)=7(10)-44
6+20=70-44
26=26 checks!

It doesn't matter which one you do, you will still come up with correct answer:

6+44 = 7y-2y
50 = 5y
or

-7y+2y = -44-6
-5y = -50

When you divide 50 by 5 on either answer you'll get same result

y=10

6+2y=7y-44 - i would subtract 2y on both sides so it becomes 6+2y-2y=7y-44-2y since you need to combine like terms (2y-2y=0 and 7y-2y=5y), the equation would now be 6=5y-44. then, you add 44 on both sides (6+44=5y-44+44) combine like terms again. 50=5y. divide both sides by 5. y=10.

add 44 to both sides, subtract 2y from both sides. you get :

44+6=7y-2y
50=5y divide 5 on both sides:
y=10
