comp is short for "asphalt composition". Each "comp" shingle is a miniature version of a tar & gravel roof. comp shingles are made by layering tar/felt/fiberglass, with the final layer having very small gravel imbeded in it. This gravel is what you see when you look at a "comp" roof.
