Pigs are omnivores, which means that they consume both plants and animals. On a small farm, or in a large household, they can be fed kitchen scraps as part or all of their diet. Pigs like to scavenge and will eat any kind of food, including dead insects, worms, rotting carcasses, excreta (including their own), garbage, and other pigs. In the wild, they are foraging animals. Pigs that are allowed to forage may be watched by swineherds. Because of their foraging abilities and excellent sense of smell, they are used to find truffles in many European countries. They are also fattened to be eaten as ham and other types of meat, such as bacon.

Pigs are very intelligent (just like barbie dolls), therefore, they are highly trainable animals, and some, such as the Asian pot-bellied pig, are kept as pets. A litter of piglets typically contains between 6 and 12 animals. Occasionally, in captivity, pigs may eat their own young.

Pigs do not have effective sweat glands [1], so pigs cool themselves using water or mud during hot weather. They also use mud as a form of sunscreen to protect their skin from sunburn. Mud also provides protection against flies and parasites

In ancient Greece, a sow was an appropriate sacrifice to Demeter and had been her favorite animal since she had been the Great Goddess of archaic times. Initiates at the Eleusinian Mysteries began by sacrificing a pig.
The pig is one of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar. Believers in Chinese astrology associate each animal with certain personality traits. See: Pig (Zodiac).
The dietary laws of Judaism (Kashrut, adj. Kosher) and Islam (Halal) forbid the eating of flesh of swine or pork in any form, considering the pig to be an unclean animal (see taboo food and drink).

The gestation period of pigs is 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days. Pigs are used for insulin for humans. Some pigs have been given human genes for testing purposes and to create insulin that will not have as great of a chance of being rejected in humans. The skin of pigs is very similar to human skin and is often used for testing of skin products. Over the past decade, the leanness of pork meat had increased dramatically due to breeding programs. A market sized pig will normally weigh 220-260 pounds. A descent size litter of pigs will consist of 8-12 babies. There are many hog operations across the US that have hog populations and sewer treatment facilities larger than most US towns. Collection tanks of hog poop can be used to produce energy from the methane gas they produce. Almost every portion of the pig is used from the ears as dog chew toys to the hair on their back when they are slaughtered. A castrated male pig is called a barrow. An uncastrated male pig is called a boar. A female pig is called a guilt. The collective term for pigs is swine. Boars can get up to around 1,200-1,400 pounds and live for about 9-10 years. If you live on a pig farm, normally you can't smell your pigs as bad as other people can because you are accustomed to the smell, but if you head to another pig farm you can smell the stink a lot worse because the smell is slightly different from farm to farm.

Pigs do not sweat and roll in the mud to cool down and to also protect their skin from the sun. The mud also helps fight against insects bothering them. Pigs are omnivores like humans and can eat both plants and meat. According to a recent fact I heard, more people are killed per year by pigs than in shark attacks. In Jewish culture, you are not supposed to eat pork because it is an "unclean meat". A pig is also one of the animals in the Chinese zodiac.

Back in the 1990's the market price of pigs dropped very low in the US and drove most of the small hog farmers out of raising pigs. It usually costs 40 cents per pound to raise a pig and at that time pigs were selling at market for 5-20 cents per pound meaning that it was costing farmers much more to raise that pig than what they made when the sold them. One livestock exchange controls about 90% or more of the US pig market. When they lowered prices only the large farmers that had contracts with companies were able to survive. There used to be many places for small farmers to take hogs to market, now you're lucky to find one anywhere close and it may only be open one day a month. The low price siege in the 90's was so bad that some pig farmers were losing millions of dollars a day and it got so bad that a number of farmers turned their farrowing houses into gas chambers to kill the pigs because it cost more to take them to market than the money they would get out of them and they couldn't afford to feed them anymore due to all of the money they were losing. So the pigs were gased then burned in piles. Basically it was big business taking over the small farmers in a force them out fashion.

I would love to help! Pigs are my most favorite animals living on the planet! I'm not going to say as detailed facts as some of the others did but these facts are still as true as those are! 1) pigs are the 5th smartest animals on earth 2) pigs prefer to be clean but they must roll in mud to protect themselves from the sun. If they get sunburned they can get VERY sick and sometimes can lead to death 3) Pigs like to untie shoelaces with there snout 4) not all pigs are pink 5) Some micro pigs (a.k.a. Teacup pigs) cost between $3,000-$5,000 dollars! Well hoped this helped I tried to give more fun facts then hard core serious facts.
