Hey guys!!

I just got off the phone with a woman who called and wanted to set up an interview for a potential job tomorrow. She Was asking a few questions over the phone just to get an idea of who I am and my job related experience and she asked me what I would like to be paid hourly----I didn't want to flat out say a specific number, so I told her that it was negotiable and I would accept whatever they felt comfortable offering me. Here's the thing though: on the job advertisement I responded to online it said that the position started at $13.00 per hour......do you think since I said what I said to her pay rate question she will offer me that starting rate or try to offer me something less? Thanks guys, and wish me luck for my interview tomorrow!! :)

If the job ad states that the starting pay rate is $13.00, I hardly doubt that they will offer you a lower starting pay than that. And if so, just bring up what the ad said. Whem they ask you again during your interview try going slightly higher than the $13.00. It all depends on your relative job experience to job you are applying for. If you have alot of experience try $14.50. But I wouldn't take anything less than $13.00. Good Luck!

You stated that the rate STARTED at $13.00/hr. With your experience they may offer you more. What you said over the phone shouldn't matter. The pay rate was set up by the company and advertised at a STARTING rate. That means if the position is offered to you they would start you out, at the very least, $13.00/hr. Good luck on your interview.

basic negotiations...

it is their job to get the best qualified people at the lowest amount possible. since this directly contradicts your objective, you will have to negotiate.

if the ad says it starts at $13/hr, then you already know what the minimum is. they may, however, lowball you by saying that your qualifications are not that high. who knows...

anyway, i found it is best to answer that question with a range that is acceptable to you. you could have worded it like..."based on the job description and expectations you gave me, my range is between x and y"

good luck
