Pet rats are actually one of the cleanest animals. Just do some research on line and sit down with your parents to discuss the situation. Act responsible and show a lot of intrest in getting one. Personally, I've had mice before and they were great as first pets and easy to take care of and clean the cage.
Just act responsible and allow them to think about it. Also, you can always go to a pet store and let them look at them and hold them.

Tell your parents that rats actually do make pretty good pets, especially if you're interested in training them to do things...
"Domesticated rats make excellent pets for children and adults alike. They are highly intelligent (being the most used in studies for intelligence and psychology research), clean, and very sociable. They interact with their owners the same as dogs and cats do and may be easily trained. Although rodents are nocturnal (sleeping during the day and active at night), rats will quickly learn to adjust their schedule and be ready to come out and play when you get home from school or work. Pet rats and mice require no vaccinations and carry no diseases. The Plague of the twelfth century Europe was caused by the flea carried by the rat and other species of animals including man. Because of the rats close proximity to man throughout history, they have been unfairly blamed for this catastrophe. They also do not make any noise nor need to be walked every day (although they love to go out with you when you visit friends!). Watching mice play can be a lot of fun. They are great stress reducers and are equivalent to having a tank of fish."

I'd say if you really want one you should lay out a list of pros and cons and show your parents how the pros outweigh the cons. if that does't work then ask for like a bull mastiff puppy--how can they say no to a tiny little rat compared to a big huge slobbering dog? good luck!

Tell them that some rats clean themselves. Alley rats usually eat anything they find on the ground. Pet rats should be fed good.

Sorry, but rats ARE kind of dirty... I love rats, and I keep three, in a large cage; but they DO smell, even tho I clean their cage often. I've had mice for years, and in small numbers they don't smell; but rats really do.

You can do the reasearch and show them. Give them examples and that if you get female rats they don't have as much of an oder. Take them to the pet shop and show them how they clean themselves often. Hope you get some!!!
