You have to divide the salary by the number of hours worked to earn it. That's the only way!
If you get paid $4000 a month and you work 40 hours a week you have worked an AVERAGE of 173.33 hours per month (40 hours/week times 52 weeks per year divided by 12 months), depending on your exact pay period. Thus you would be making a little more than $23 an hour.
The 2080 quoted by Zandelia is just 40 hours per week times 52 weeks in a year or the number of hours worked in a standard year. However, as other people pointed out, you might work more than 40 hours weekly on salary... or LESS. What ever the number of hours worked in a pay period, divide the pay for that period by the hours to get the answer!

Take your monthly salary, multiply by 12, for the months of the year and divide by 52, for the week of the month. Then divide by 40 hours for the avergae week. The result would be the hourly rate

Assuming you aren't working overtime, take your annual salary and divide by 52 (approximately the number of weeks in a year). Thus if I make $52K/year, I would go
$52,000/52=$1000/week
Divide that number by 40 (the number of hours in a typical work week)
$1000/40 =$25/hour

yeah pay didied by hrs, dont do divided by week first because some weeks u work different hrs, i assume u get paid every week or 2, so do that. also u want to use the before taz pay because depending on the pay and number of hrs the tax influences the outcome, so after tazes u may make 10.60 or 11.20 depending, but before taxes you'll always make the same amount

Total the number of hours worked, divide the total salary by hours, and that's $/hour.

So you got paid 42000k for the year
[42000 / 52weeks] / 40hours per week
= ~$20.19 per hour NICE HOURLY FOR BEING SALARY
But working salary, because you work way more than 40 hours, realistically it's:
[42000 / 52weeks] / 70hours per week
= ~$11.54 per hour SUCKY HOURLY FOR BEING SALARY
This is why I don't work SALARY! It sucks
