I know i would automatically...but she wasn't pleased.

Can I just add this was just a quick matter of fact discussion…just like “it tore? Don’t worry just get him to get another one.” “He’s broke” “If he can afford to party with his friends, he can pay £3.99 for a book”. “forget it – I’ll get”

And I though that was it….it was only when we continued talking about other things I realised she was being weird and that was probably it. We’re still friends that’s not in question….its just a book. It was only after I realised she was unhappy and thought maybe I shouldn’t have asked her to replace it.

A true friend,or even a polite person would have offered,if you lend someone something you expect it back in the condition it went in.If she wasn't pleased thats quite selfish of her.How would she feel if she was in the same position & it was an item of hers that got ruined?

You shouldn't have to ask her. Your friends brother should offer to buy you a new book, as he is the one that tore the cover. Talk it over with her and say that you'd like a new book, and that you think her brother should be the one of pay for it

I would also automatically buy a new book if that happened - but I don't think I'd ask a friend to. It's just not worth the hassle - but I wouldn't lend her any more of them.

put sticky tape on the cover and stay friends, do you really want to fall out over a silly book? just don't lend her anything else in future...you learn by your mistakes hun...as long as the book isn't ruined (like missing pages or coffee stains) then i don't see what the problem is...be happy

Yes its ok of you to ask. It was also brave of you to do so. Your friends issue shouldnt be with you but with her brother. He tore it so he should fund its replacement.Mistake or not your property should be returned in the same condition it was lent.

she shouldn't have even given you the book back in that condition... she should just have bought a new one straight off..... the next time she asks to borrow something just say no...

Yes, I would be livid... She should have taken better care of it, if you scratched one of her CD's or something she'd be quick enough to ask for a new one...
