I just bought a 2001 GMC sonoma. 2.2L 4 cyl a while ago.. winter rolled around and when i turned on the heat, it doesnt blow out heat unless i keep it in 4th gear 3500 RPM on the highway. It just blows out a bunch of cold air. The AC works just fine.

Any idea's what could be wrong/ how do I check it?

I would fist check your water level and make sure it is up to level. If that checks out fine the other issue is a vacuum leak at the exchange box. A lot of the GM cars and trucks use vacuum switches for the doors in the exchange box. if one of them gets disconnected or damaged they will not work correctly. since you are getting some heat it tells me your heater core is at least working. Check the water level and then see if the exchange box is working correctly.

Have a mechanic check the thermostat (think that is what they call it). I bought a Chevy Impala last January that had been a rental car for a year and when I test drove it I checked the AC and heater and found that no hot air blew out. The dealer fixed it and it was the thermostat.

You have a vacuum leak. The heater controls are vacuum powered. The engine has better vacuum at high speeds, so they work then.
Or you're really low on coolant.
