Maybe you would like to think so and to tell you the truth so would I. But then if you think about all the competition there is for every little thing in the world and how much there is stopping us from doing things, like the government and small-minded people, than I don't really know.

To an extent we control our own destiny. Those who believe God has a plan still believe in free will so plans may change. We control ourselves, how we act, what we do, etc. for the most part, but we are also subject to the rest of the world including natural calamities, accidents, and much more. You can make life less random by having a plan for yourself, getting a good education, working hard, etc. and to that extent we make our own luck, but there will still be many factors over which you will have no control.

I think that in some ways, yes. By our actions we choose what will happen in our lives. Some other things come to us by chance also making our destiny complete. I think chance and the way we live our lives is how destiny works.

I believe we do make our own fate - BUT - it's not without just a little help and guidance from 'them above' .....
I believe that our lives our mapped out to a fair extent .... that there is a general path - and an outline destination - that we are meant to take and arrive at .... however I believe that through having choice we 'decide' how we get there and what the quality of the end result will be ..... let me give you a personal example .....
for most of my life I was like most other people on the 9-5 roller coster - like a hamster on a wheel .... getting nowhere fast and earning just enough to keep my basic lifestyle....
I had a car accident in 1989 and everything about 'me' was wiped out - my looks, my personality, my basic character, my lifestyle, my partner, my friends, my job, my memories ..... I had to rebuild myself from scratch, working only from the bits and pieces of memories I had, I had to 'recreate' the person I thought/remembered I was - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder .... during my journey of rebuilding I met some people in therapy who used art as their psyche tool ... I decided I wanted to be an art therapist .... I went back to school, got qualifications, but when it came to it life dealt me another blow and I couldn't complete the course I had embarked on .... however since 1998 when I graduated, the different employments I had to take through necessity, not choice, actually gave me a lot of grounding and training in exactly that type of field .... so although not taking a convention course, I have actually achieved much of the training at ground floor/hands on level - which has given me insight and experience that no training could have - it was too personal - but it did give me the experience and expertise to enter a field of work, working at the same level in much the same area .... but it has taken from 2001 (when I would have graduated as an art therapist) until now (5 years later) to achieve this ... so as I said, the end result is much the same way, but the route was slightly different .... maybe I had a few lessons to learn along the way before achieving my goal.......

Many religious people would answer no, since God knows your destiny. I am religious and I disagree. Yes God knows our future, but that is based on every decision you make. Even asking this question on yahoo answers might have already changed your destiny.

Yes, we control our own destiny.
There are many things that influence and impact our life outside of our control, but we are in charge of all the choices that we make.
God may have dealt the hand, but it is up to us to play it.

Our fate or destiny is written on our foreheads when we are born.We are often given two paths to choose from but ultimately they will lead to the same destiny. One might be smoother than the other. Why do you think people say ...I felt as if I was outside my own body when I did that.....(meaning when they hurt someone in anger)...it was beyond their control and a force mightier than theirs was making them do it.
