Tampons can hurt if they are put in incorrectly as too low down or put into the wrong hole it can be painful, pains similar to very bad menstrual cramps, if this is what is happening simply remove the tampon and try again at a later time.

Often nerves affect tampon insertion, your vagina naturally stretches and expands there is also lubrication in the discharge and menstrual flow to help insertion, but if you are nervous this will make the muscles in your vagina tense up making penetration difficult. You may want to look at the following article, it is about painful penetrative sex, but much of the information and advice is also valid here as it is primarily about painful vaginal penetration and how to resolve the problem so explain why this can cause pain - http://www.scarleteen.com/sexuality/owtowow.html

If your hymen is in tact this may also make tampon insertion difficult, the hymen breaking can be painful for some girls, where as for some girls there is no pain at all or the hymen breaking can even be pleasurable. If your hymen is in tact this may be what it causing you pain so you may want to wait until you are older to use tampons. If you don't know if your hymen is in tact you can look by sitting comfortably and using a mirror to look at your vulva (external part of your genitals) to see the vaginal opening. The hymen is different from girl/woman to girl/woman but usually if in tact it will look like a ring of flesh around the opening to your vagina, where as if broken it will look like flaps of skin around the vaginal opening. There is a good site that shows images, not photos, of the hymen so you know what to look for here - http://www.healthystrokes.com/hymengallery.html

Tampons can also be felt even when put into the vagina correctly as tampons are dry wads of material it means that they can cause friction burns and drying of the vaginal walls, chemicals within commercial tampons can also cause irritation or allergic reactions. The string can be felt, many women find that when it moves about during the day it can become painful as the string can pull tight between the inner labia (inner lips) of their vulva (external genitals) acting like cheese string - ouch.

Tampons expand, widthways expanding tampons can contribute to bloating feeling during menstruation and length-ways expanding tampons can expand into the already sensitive cervix, tampons also pose health risks meaning that the decrease in vaginal health can contribute to menstrual health problems such as heavy menstrual flow or menstrual cramping.

I had the same problem when I first started using tampons. Little did I know that I was using ones that were too big. Try the lightest flow ones you can find. Even if you're flow is very heavy. The more you use them the easier it will be. Your vagina isn't used to having something jammed in there. It just needs time to adjust to the change and eventually it will stretch out so you'll be able to use them. I'm pretty sure they make really small tampons now for girls who are just starting to use them. And relaxing really helps. If you're nervous and really tight it will hurt more. Oh and stay away from ones with cardboard applicators, they're more painful, I think. Try using ones with the plastic tip, it seems to slide better. Don't be so quick to give up though. They're much more efficient than maxi pads and much easier to hide in your pocket or purse. You can also ask you mom or older sister or even a friend who has been using them. We all go through this problem so we're willing to help. Hang in there, you'll be fine.

You're too tense. Try to relax. Take a deep breath, and release the breath. Then try to use the tampon. You'll be fine. It takes a few tries for most girls.

This is totally normal. It happened to me too, I kno it hurts really bad. It hurts because your hymen is not broken, and putting a tampon in there will make it break, it might even bleed a little. But after the hymen is broken then it won't hurt putting one in anymore.

Lay on your back with your legs in the air (open! I can't believe i'm typing this! lol) and you may find easy to insert your tampon. Applicators are good if your new at it. i know this isn't practical if your out, hence the use of applicators!

Practice makes perfect!

Either you are using too big of a tampon or you not relaxed enough to wear them OR you are allergic to them! If you are going to try to wear them use the lightest ones you can. I use "TAMPAX SLENDER REGULAR" Anything bigger HURTS. Good Luck!

I have had that problem, either because the tampon was too large (super), or because I was too dry down there. If it persists, I would talk to your doctor about it, you may be allergic...

I have the same problem. I asked my Dr. and he said that I have a tipped Uterus and that when I try to put it in it hits my uterine wall instead of my cervix. 20% of all women have a tipped uterus and it also may pose to be a little difficult to get pregnant. This may be your problem but its best to ask your dr. and switch to pads.

No. Get one with a smooth plastic applicator, i can recommend tampax compact. Follow the instructions carefully inside the box and remeber to relax. If you tense up it will be alot harder.
Lots of luck!
