They have opposite language. When a dog wags his tail, he's happy. When a cat lashes his tail, he's going to attack. A dog holds up a paw to signal play, but for a cat this is defensive. A cat purrs when it's content, but to a dog it sounds like a growl.
Animals raised together usually figure each other out and don't fight.

in the wild they are competitive fro food and survival like most different species.
in the home cats see doggie drool coming their way.and say ugh! if they could talk a survey would say dogs are big goofy and annoying.. cats want to left alone darling...unless in the mood.
and they don't like sharing their food.. which dogs will swallow in a bite or two unless properly trained.
as kids we had many animals. the funniest sight was seeing the undersized runt little kitty chasing our big great Dane! she was smaller than his head but she could down him with a well placed nose swipe. he'd never give up annoying her and trying to get her to play!
cats and dogs raised together learn to at least tolerate or often like each other.
we also had a dog who insisted on trying to nurse some kittens who's mom wasn't attentive. it was also pretty funny sight.

Ours have always gotten along well. The cats fight more among themSELVES than with the dog!

they don't always fight!!! my dogs get along with my cats and even protect them from other dogs!!!

my dog chases all cats but mine, kinda weird, might be cause mine dont run, and the dog got hooked once, that might have learned him.
