ok its not required but its a good thing to have. i live in johannesburg, sa and let me give you some advice try to blend in! tourists strand out... take your pic and put your camera away, opt for a cash card from the exchange co (they cant pick you if you dont have cash) dont go into a squarter camp (with/without a local) o yes dont get out of your car in the kruger national park, the animals are wild and the lions will eat humans. but enjoy your trip, it truely is a great country.

Insurance is not necessary but given the lawlessness and violent crime you would be an absolute fool to travel without it. You cannot rely on Public Hospitals which are an absoloute disgrace. You would have to take your own bedding ( if they found you a bed) and Doctors in Kwa Zulu Natal are asking for protection from the violent criminals who wander into the Hospitals and rob them at gunpoint. You could even end up in a Hospital close to a Township which would be nothing short of a nightmare. There are reported cases of Nurses thieving from patients and you need to understand you are about to enter a 3rd World Country in decay. Health Insurance,Life Insurance and Repatriation Insurance are an absolute must.It is not a case of if you will be the victim of violent crime it is a case of when. Nowhere is safe, particularly Cape Town, which is an absolute haven for the criminals who target Tourists. Unfortunately you cannot avoid the N2 as you leave the Airport but that road is an absolute nightmare for those who travel it and/or work on it. Keep well away from the numerous squatter camps and be careful on Table Mountain as a number of Tourists have been violently attacked. In fact if you can change your destination do so.

No, according to my husband, you do not need to have travel insurance. However, when we were in SA in June it was very worthwhile having it. We hired cars, walked the streets and visited loads of places and there are pickpockets everywhere. So it is a Very Good Idea to have it. Go to Moneysupermarket.com and you will find good value insurance for your needs.
Please don't go without it. Health costs are as expensive as here and there isn't a National Health to fall back on!

There is no legal requirement for insurance, but it is always good to get travel insurance. If you are out of your own country for less than 90 days at a time you can get medical and repatriation insurance at a very low cost. (It is worth the peace of mind).

We have hospital comparable to the best in the wolrd (We did the first heat transplant etc), but if you get hurt you will have to PAY !

Get insurance.
