The death penalty is pretty much a dead issue, so to speak. It's not going to be successfully challenged for a while. Gun control is also a dead issue. No one will risk alienating gun owners.

Abortion will have legs for a long time. The lines are drawn pretty sharply here and have been for 30 years. You have a majority supporting abortion more or less in its current state - pretty much on demand while, except for South Dakota, states and the federal government just whittle at abortion controls - parentparental consent, waiting periods, limits on certain types of abortions (late term abortions, for example). This is a problem that is not going away. It's like the USA and al qaeda. Each side in the abortion issue thinks they are the USA. I mention South Dakota because the state government recently enacted a law banning nearly all abortions but in a ballot referendum on Tuesday, that was overturned and the voters elected not to go that route. It's a bit more complicated than that but you'll have to read the details.

Good luck with the poli sci paper. And there's nothing wrong with coming here for advice.

Religion and the part it plays in government.
If you cover this topic you will cover the big ones, abortion, gay marriage, stem cell research.

Ones religious beliefs have no place in government. This a government by the people for the people and not all of those people are religious. We should be tolerant and respectful of others opinions while never forcing it on them.

Arguments of such should be taught they are camouflage for the simple minded, something to adhere to those who have nothing in common but the support of the votes.

You're on the right track. Add illegal immigration to the mix, too, if you'd like. Or outsourcing.
