To obtain a pap smear the doctor takes "smears" of tissue and fluid from your vaginal walls and cervix. Those smears are stained on a glass slide and then looked at under a microscope. If the examiner sees any cellular irregularity, you are asked to return and retest. It could be cancer, it could be an infection, it could be an overgrowth of yeast, it could be any number of things. Don't jump to conclusions, just go and repeat the test.

not necessarily. some tests come back abnormal which could also mean not enough cells were collected to detect any precancerous cells. By the way, I would ask for a PAP TEST not a PAP SMEAR. Pap smears are the conventional way and that is what they do to the cells. . "SMEAR" them. The Pap Test is liquid based cytology and the detection of pre cancer cells is way much better. I used to get abnormal pap smears all the time but since I made sure my gyno uses a pap test (specifically THinPrep), I have not had any abnormal readings and it's been almost 7 years!!!! Good luck and I wouldn't stress out. Stay calm and all will be OK. You should also ask your GYN everything! Do not be afraid. They have to keep everything confidential (HIPPA laws) so you can be as free as you want with your questions. Believe me, they get some crazy questions but I wouldn't NOT ask if I was curious. Education is important in understanding life. . . .

A Pap smear is a way to look at a sample of cells taken from a woman's cervix. The test is used to look for changes in the cells of the cervix that show cervical cancer or conditions that may develop into cancer.
All women who are or who have been sexually active, or who have reached age 21, should have an annual Pap smear. It is your best tool to detect pre-cancerous conditions and hidden, small tumors that may lead to cervical cancer. If detected early, cervical cancer can be cured.

Papsmear is the test- not a disease or condition. I had a couple of abnormal paps that showed a "precancerous" condition that never amounted to anything. They just want a second sample to make sure nothing is wrong. It is usually nothing. Do your follow-ups and get it sqaured away. They are usually able to come back and say "nevermind"!

I hope you don't really talk like that....?
Every woman has at least one abnormal pap smear in her life. It's not a big deal and most of the time they just freeze and remove the abnormal cells in cryosurgery. It's an outpatient procedure. Doesn't have to mean cancer at all. Talk to your doctor about it.
