Ancient Egyptians believed you should have everything from your life with you in the afterlife so if you had any pets they were mummified to keep you company on your journey to the afterlife. Cats in particualr were a common pet because they were considered quite sacred. The goddes Bast (also Bastet, and occasional spelled Pasht) was a cat headed goddess who was a goddess of the home and family. Cats were seen as mediators between life and death as well as being all around mystical in general. These qualities made them quite desirable as pets and perfect companions to accompany you into the underworld. Hippos in Ancinet were hunted for many reasons. First of all they were much more numerous there at the time. Hippos are rather large and can be extremely dangerous to small fishing boats on the river or even to people who come to close on the shores where the hippos are. Because of this areas which had even a small population would want to frequently hunt any hippos in their area to keep the people safe from harm. They would also hunt them for food since hippos are large they could feed many people. A whole village may be able to eat from one hippo. Finally hippos were hunted for sport. Much like hunting a bear or a 5 point buck or moose. Large animals are frequently hunted because a hunter who has killed such a large animal is seen to be a skillful hunter.

Hippos were hunted because they were considered evil by the gods, their meat was consumed by the commoners only and not by those who had contact with the gods such as priests.I will leave u with a couple of reference for information validation and incase u r looking for more info.

The Egyptians praised and valued cats for their aid to humans in controlling vermin and for their ability to fight and kill snakes, the domesticated cat slowly became a symbol of grace and poise. The Egyptian Goddess Mafdet, the deification of justice and execution, was a fierce lion-headed goddess. The cat goddess Bast (also known as Bastet) eventually replaced the cult of Mafdet, and Bast's image softened over time and she became the deity representing protection, fertility, and motherhood.

Dogs, fish, baboons, snakes, just peoples pets so that they could still be together in the afterlife. As for hippos being hunted it could be there ivory (tusks/teeth) and maybe their meat.
