Greetings!

The reason being, is that the two superpowers, control the country. Thus they (the only bi-partisan thing they ever do) draw lines in districts favoring them. Aside from that they also create laws regarding petition gathering which makes it next to impossible to get onto a ballot.
In reality there are in the US about a hundred actual real and legal political parties. Just the same you would on a national scale almost never see a candidate on the ballot.
Usually the only third parties that have ballot access are , Socialist, Communist, and US Constitution.
Naturally it is not fair. It's politics!

Good Luck

Third parties are merely fringe parties. They do not serve the left or the right they serve the far-left or the far-right. Most Americans regardless of whether they are left or right leaning are really not that far from one another on most issues. The fringe parties are just too far outside the mainstream for the common American to vote for. Yes I did end my last sentence with a preposition. Because of their fringe status they cannot garner the necessary financial support that they need to be competitive on a national level.

Lobbyists and special interest groups pour money into the two major parties. Money that can not be matched by independents unless they already hold power such as Lieberman.

Also the two parties have passed laws that make it nearly impossible for third party candidates to participate in any debates, to get matching federal funds or to get "equal airtime".

Some are.....but they just don't have the following that the two main one do.....there are just to many rep. and dems. and many of them will not even consider voting for any other party...meaning a third party will just have a hard time of getting elected to any major office.

The other parties don't have enough money, enough publicity, enough influence, or enough media coverage.

Most feel that even if their non-mainstream candidate wins, their vote is marginalized by the mainstream party office holders.

Money.

This includes (primarily) backing from groups and organizations already set or established with the other two political parties.

Because we don't run on coalition governments, as many parliamentary governments do. It tends to make it a 2 party system then.

Largely due to the fact that they don't usually have the funds for fancy campaigns and that people are generally afraid of what they don't know so they stick with what's common.
