The best way is to compare a male and female side-by-side. Females are a much smaller distance between the genitalia and anus. Also, females have an almost Y-shaped slit on her vulva.

It is very difficult to tell the difference when they are babies (even 2-3 months old) and that's why some people get surprise litters. This is a very good link with pictures.
