Are you going for genre or literary fiction? If it's for a specifc genre, try to give it what it calls for: action. If it's romance, add love. If it 's horror, give it scares like a ghost story. If it's action/adventure, keep the pace moving forward. If it's suspense/mystery, give it twists and turns. If it's intrigue, give it something unexpected. You get the idea. If it's literary fiction, it has got to do have a good storyline and plot with great dialogue and narration. Good luck.

In a short story, you want tight writing. Write it how you want it, and then go back and condense it down. Say only what you need, and let a lot be implied. Don't waste many words on long descriptions when a few precise words can say the same thing.

An intriguing story can have a good plot (a story that people will want to hear and be pulled into) and very unique character names works well.

Something thrilling or with a good plot line and well developed characters. If you wanted to grab my attention, go with a fantasy genera. Just write what you know. I personally prefer the main characters to be girls about my own age. Just go with what you want to say.
