It depends. Rhyming poems only work if the rhymes seem natural, but can be more engaging. Also, some people see this as a person who is not a serious poet trying to write poetry. Poems that don't rhyme give you more freedom, and can give more depth of feeling if written properly. I prefer these.

I like writing poems that don't rhyme because sometimes its easier and less childish but when I'm reading a poem, I like it to rhyme. It makes it somewhat easier to read.

Being over 50 I am old school and prefer rhyming poetry over the stuff people write today.

I prefer to write poems the rhyme and have lyrical meter. The forced structure of these poems (sonnets, villanelles) tightens my writing and makes me use only the really, really good words. When writing freestyle, I tend to get too wordy and sappy, and those poems don't have as much zap to them.

I'm not stuck on having them rhyme, but if they don't, I still want them to have cadence and meter, not just some self-indulgent, loosely connected lines of descriptive word-play.
Poetry is a discipline, not a stream-of-consciousness spate of words, which seems to be the current fad that is posing as poetry.
