ok, it's getting dark, so i need to hurry. on a chevy 350, how should i align the two gears underneath the timing chain cover? should the timing mark(dot) on the top gear be on the very bottom, with the bottom gear's dot on the very top? or should both dots be on the top of the gears to show correct timing? please help, thanks.

Is this a new build? Or a repair? Did the chain break on you? I'm just attempting to find out why the timing is off to start with. If I remember correctly the marks on the 350's have to be pointing to each other. the best way is to pull the valve cover on the 1-3-5-7 side and rotate the cam until the valves are completely closed. the cam only goes around once where the crank will go around twice. as long as the #1 piston is at Top Dead center and the valves on the # 1 are full closed you should be able to work out the marks is the dot is 180 degrees off then you'll know pretty fast with the dots. Hope this helps.

The dot on the camshaft should be at 6.o clock [ big gear] The crankshaft [small gear] should be at 12 o clock. Both dots should be together. Good Luck.

So, don't screw this up. When the crank dot is at 12 oclock and the cam gear dot is at 6 oclock, that is the easiest way to line them up, but it is firing cyl # 6 in that position. If you then turn the crank one complete revolution, you then can put the distrib in firing cyl # 1.
