Whether baking in the oven or microwave, poking holes releases steam thus preventing the potato from bursting open. If baking, bake at 375 for 50 - 60 minutes. Depends on how large the potato is. Sometimes I pre-cook in the microwave for 4 or 5 minutes to speed up the cooking process. If doing this, only bake in the oven for about 35 - 40 minutes.

That sounds like a Cooking lesson. You poke holes the size of a fork stab, into the potato to let heat or air out.

Well, the reason I think you would poke holes in it is:
Maybe because of the water inside the skin, when it get's heated up it would blow up, or puff out!

LET STEAM ESCAPE AND HEAT EVENLY INSIDE AND KEEP FROM EXPLODING (HEAT/STEAM) POTATO.
WRAP POTOATO IN TIN FOIL FOR BAKING IN OVEN- EVEN HEATING.
