Is it hard to hook up even just a simple LED light to a USB cord to power it?

Actually no. I think there is about 5 volts DC. I guess the amount of power available depends on the computer, but it's probably very small. Maybe less that 500ma.

Lots of things are powered by a USB cable. Ipods, cameras and card readers get their power from USB terminals. technology has come a long way.

No, you can actually buy USB powered lights. There are a whole slew of devices you can buy that you can power with a USB port.
