They rays of the sun hit the earth at a more direct angle near the equator. This will cause the rays to be more intense thus making the area warmer.
Near the Equator and Southern Hemisphere however, the amount of land decreases as water increases. This will expose more of the direct rays to hit water, causing the water to warm up and evaporate.
The evaporated water will then form clouds and move back over land and will precipitates. Since such a large amount of water is being evaporated, more precipitation occurs. This causes the unique weather system in the tropical equator.

Due to the 23 1/2 degree tilt of earth's axis, (depending on the time of year) the earth's intensity is greatest there. For example during hte sumer solictice, the sun's direct rays fall on 23 1/2 degrees north (the tropic of cancer). Areas near the tropic of cancer have more direct rays (at a 90 degree angle). The intensity of hte sun's rays don't change where you go on the earth. So when you go farther up, the angle at which the sun hits earth gets smaller or larger. The same intensity of light has to be shared over a larger region.
If you don't understand hold a flashlight perpendicular to the ground. Next hold the flash light 45 degrees in refrence to the group. In the 45 degree angle, the light is less bright though, it has the same power as the one being held perpendicular.
So when the suns rays hit the earth at perpendicular angles, the intensity is greatest and hottest.
THE CLOSER YOU ARE TO THE PERPENDICULAR RAYS THE HOTTER IT IS! (Generally speaking of course)

It gets hotter as you move to the equator. The weather varies, from season to season, less as you move closer to the equator. It gets hot and stays hot. The differences in daylight versus night hours gets less as you near the equator. Weather along the equator still varies greatly. In Africa, the equator goes through the Sahara desert where it is always dry, hot, windy, dusty and rains rarely. In South America, the equator goes through a tropical jungle where it rains enough to make the Amazon the biggest river in the world.
