Maybe not forced but encouraged. If you only have healthy food around and keep the sweets minimal then good eating habits will come naturally. For children who already have bad eating habits it can take some work on getting them to eat correctly but when they get hungry enough they will eat what ever you put infront of them. I run a daycare and I keep the sweets out. Children at first complain that I don't have the chips and sweets they are used to but after a while I hear the parents comments on how they can no longer keep fruit and vegetables stocked in their homes. I have taught the children that good eating can be better and sweeter (if cooked correctly) then candy and junk food. It has gone a long way.

Everything in Moderation. To teach a child anything that is good for them, you sometimes have to enforce the rules. This is how they learn where the boundaries are. If good eating habits is a rule to be learned, then you have to put the quality foods in front of them consistently and not allow the junk to be had at will.
Find the quality foods that they like, and use it as a means to reward their good behaviour for eating right.
If you don't want the junk foods on their diet, you have to set the example first, always, and consistently.

Forced and encouraged are two different things.
Forcing to me, is the physical act of shoving it down someone's throat.
However, people tend to eat things they are accostomed to. So yes, I think there is a place for pushing kids to at least TRY some things they may think they don't like. Otherwise children may not even try lot of things they would find out they like.
On the other hand, in this age of obesity, I do NOT believe in telling a child they must "clean their plate" before they can leave the table. I do believe in no dessert if they don't and no junk food after dinner.

What do you mean by "quality food"? Most children like spaghetti, tacos, fruit, chicken, and even vegetables. As to forcing food upon them to "learn" good eating habits, do you mean making healthy food choices or table manners? In either case, education is better than force.

In the modern parlance----duhuh!!!
Not only will this get the kids in the habit of eating well in the future, it forces them to eat well NOW. Health first, ask questions later.

force is not the answer, but having it available at every meal is! And you can learn to love vegetables in cheese sauces and/or with a dip as an appetizers...worked with mine.
