I asked a similar question but here is my answer. It is exactly the same. Rome was in a state of peace for a long time and the people got complacent. the republic was inindated by foreign idological ideas through imigration that resulted in liberal ideas and agenda that attacked the very fibers that built the empire. Sex, glutony and the ideas of epicurious took hold and rotted the values that inturn left the shell hollow.

Rome and Byzantium. Rome neglected her armies and spent money on social security- (the "panem et circenses"). They also neglected immigration controls- allowing huge numbers of refugees to come into the empire and settle. When the barbarians attacked the Roman army was too few in number and too poorly armed to resist, while the immigrants ripped the Empire from the inside.

Byzantium also neglected her armies, but always had money for civic projects, museums, churches. The middle class was heavilly taxed but the rich were allowed tax shelters- the equivalent of today's Kennedy foundation or Heinz. They might have survived even that, but its ruling classes decided that internal politics were more important than the good of the state. In the battle of Manzikert the Emperor was captured and half of his army was massacred, simply because the other half was commanded by his political opponent. The end result however was the loss of half of Byzantium to the Turks- land which was never recovered, because Byzantium led a totally defensive war policy. so, little by little, they were eaten.

Yes

Rome started out as a republic, but ended up as an empire. We both are arrogant and way over our heads in military aspects. We were ruled by kings and vowed never again be ruled by a monarchy.

See my question:
What are some similarities between the United States and Rome? Will they end up with the same fate?

In the sense of being a declining empire? Probably not. The US never exerted as much control over world events as Rome did over its colonies. Furthermore, even if American power is declining, it's declining for different reasons. Rome collapsed because its rulers couldn't stop murdering one another, its wealthy citizens refused to do anything productive, and its borders were being invaded by hostile armies. None of that is happening here.

Yea; I had to do a report on this. The US derived it's idea for a Democracy, Republic, constitution, and many other laws, from the Ancient Romans, as well as from the Ancient Greek.

Absolutely not.

Rome was an Empire, the United States is a Republic.
Rome was ruled by an emperor or Caesar and the U.S. is ruled by publicly elected officials with the President given the highest office.
The emperor ruled until death, the President of the U.S. can only be in office a maximum of eight years.
Women, slaves and the poor were not allowed to vote or even speak on issues in ancient Rome. Anyone over the age of 18 and is a legal citizen can vote in the U.S.
The senate of Rome was a bunch of men brown-nosing the Caesar for their own gain. The senate of the U.S. is a diverse group brown-nosing the American people for their vote.

yes, - powerful, advanced empires ( one direct, one neo) both eventually overcome by their corruption and total failure to understand other cultures largely because of their incredible arrogance and blanket assupmtion that everyone wants to be like them.
