Partition Iraq into three new countries; The Kurds in the North, the Sunnis in the Middle, and the Shites in the South. Give each ethnic group their own country and government.
Iraq when it was founded was not really a country at all. The British Colonial rulers made it into one. They put three groups of people who can't stand each other and called it Iraq.
Why not?? It worked for Yugoslavia and Bosnia. Why couldn't it work for Iraq.

To end the war? I'm intrigued as to whether you were for the war when it started? The war was always based on lies, and those who did not understand that in the first place, I am sure will have no idea on how or even why to end the war, because their thoughts are not their own and are based on what they are told by the media and other media drinking sponge-heads, I find it quite maddeningly incomprehensible that the majority of the people in a country as big as the USA can at one point be openly and confidently all for a war (that kills thousands of people and wrecks millions of lives) and then a little while later change their minds and say 'oh no this isn't right, lets stop this now'. (from the comfort of their TV armchair) I sometimes think the only reason Americans want to stop the war is not because they think its unjust, but because they do not like the bad image the rest of the world seem to be portraying them as.
So back to your question; I think the way to end this war is to bite the lip and say frickin sorry, open up talks with the Resistance and find out what there problem is, find out why there is so much hatred to the west (pre 9,11) and lets all try to make this home a one where we respect each other, and if that means making some (maybe colossal) changes, then so be it. What we need now is some honest and humble conversation, and to stop listening to nonsense that is only told so greedy fat heads can make more money.

Good question! As a Republican, I do not believe we should simply pull out entirely... that is called a retreat and gives victory to the terrorists.
However, we have to keep in mind the history of Iraq, which only gained it's independence in 1932. The british carved out the borders for Iraq following the fall of the Ottoman Empire in WW I. Prior to that, Iraq was actually three self-governed provinces: Vilayet of Mosul (the Kurds), Vilayet of Bagdad (Shiites), and Vilayet of Mosul (Sunni Arabs). These are three very different peoples with very different ideology. Since they were unified, they have been in constant turmoil fighting for control.
Some, including myself, feel it is time to correct this forced unification and allow each of the three peoples autonomy. Establish the country of Kurdistan and let the Kurds govern themselves. Establish Basra as a Sunni governed country, and Bagdad as a Shiite country. Once this is done, there is less reason for power struggles and each can establish their own government and police.
The Kurds, by the way, were key allies for us when we liberated Iraq. We owe them big time and if they gain independence, we may be called upon to help them secure their borders. The Sunnis may want help as well. They've been choosing the lessor of two evils and tolerating Al Quada as a means to fight the Shiites but they are not fond of them.
This should be less problematic than the current situation where we are getting stuck in the middle of their power struggle. I think reestablishing their separate entities will help stabilize that area greatly. In fact, the Iraqi congress already established the right of the Kurds and Sunnis to self-govern their territories so Iraq is already a country in name only, as it is.

Just do it. Nike had a brilliant commercial campaign towards the same end. Just do it.
What Bush wants is for Iraq to become like us. Democratic, free. He doesn't realize that not everyone thinks as we do, but can still live in peace with the world. Let's ease out and let the Iraqi's handle their own country. Saddam is captured and convicted.
By the way, for anyone daring to say that Democrats don't have an exit strategy: I suppose the Republicans do??? To exit, you just exit. It's not a sign of defeat, it's not a sign of weakness. Just do it already. Bush got his man. Get out already.

I'm not sure getting out completely would be such a great idea. I'm for changing our mission in Iraq from military to humanitarian, doing what we can to make reparations for the damage we've done there and, rather than engaging in a vain attempt to kill all terrorists trying to find out what got 'em so pissed in the first place and what we can do to calm them down.

i would first stage all the troops in western iraq. one huge camp. get all of them out of bagdad at the same time. then take large amounts of troops and put them on ships not far away. by that i mean within striking distance if necessary. after they are all on ships, putt putt back to the states, with heavy escorts.

I think we need fair but absolutely strict timetables for withdrawl. Give the Iraqi military timetables to follow for training and taking over defense. Then do not extend them. Right now they understand that since we have no timetables they can simply not assume repsonsibility indefinitely with no consequences.
