I have read a lot of thoughts on how much homework is appropriate for a 4th grade. From the sounds of it we are right on track 1-1.5 hrs a night. I think it's it ridiculous but it is what it is. Unfortunately I have trouble helping him with his homework at times because I need a refresher myself. Is there any good homework help online for 4th graders for free?

You should be able to learn everything you need to know in your child's textbook. You should be able to learn what you need to know from the same source as them.

To expand on the topic, I'm not sure that rolling over and doing all that work is the answer though...

As a parent I've always assumed homework was a good thing and thought that seeing my daughter working away was a good thing (she's in Gr 6 now).

But wait a minute... the teachers have our kids there in school each day for 6 or 7 hours where the kids can dedicate thier time thier to learning. Do they really need to have 1 or 2 hours homework each night on top of that? Why can't they learn enough during their 6 or 7 hours at school? I get the work from my job done during my daytime work hours.

I'm pretty sure that some teachers assign loads of homework as a failsafe, just in case they didn't cover everything in class or if they allowed their classtime to be ineffective.

Shouldn't we allow our kids to have lives outside of school? ...be able to pursue other interests? ...have fun? ...have a childhood?

We slaved away with our daughter last year as she(we) did project after project. She's very bright and did very well, but not at a cost to herself, her parents, her siblings and the overall quality of life at our home.

If I was you I'd talk to other parents and your childs teacher if its too much for you to handle. Make sure you and your child enjoy life a little.
