The Lawn in front of Kemit middle school is in the shape of 30 yd long and 16 yd wide. how much shorter is your walk if you diagonally across the lawn rather than along two side of it?
that the question and i don't get it at all... can you help me? thank

Draw a picture of the lawn. It will be a rectangle 30 yds by 16 yds. Now draw a diagonal. This will form a right triangle. You know the two legs (a and b) and you want to find the hypotenuse (c).
You need the Pythagorean theorem:
a² + b² = c²
The legs of the triangle will be a=30 and b=16. Calculate c.
30² + 16² = c²
900 + 256 = c²
c² = 1156
At this point, take the sqrt of both sides:
c = sqrt(1156)
If you check your calculator, you should get...
c = 34 yds.
So the diagonal is 34 yds. If you instead go along the sides it is 30 + 16 yds = 46 yds.
The difference is 12 yards shorter to walk along the diagonal rather than going along the sides...
Just watch out for the principal, because I think there is a "keep off the grass" sign on the lawn. :-)

(900+256)^1/2=34
46-34=12
it is 12 yards shorter

the formula is A(square)+B(square)=C(square)
16+30=C(square)
256+900=1156
the square root of 1156 is 34
so its exactly 34 yards to go across.
