Will the newly elected senate or the old senate hold confirmation hearings on Robert Gates?

The new one, in January I would guess.

It depends. It will probably be the current Senate, since they are still in office. If for whatever reason, the confirmation is put off until, say February, after the new Senate is sworn in (in January), then it would be the "Senate-elect".

From the Presidents comments that Secretary Rumsfeld will be the longest served Secretary of the Defense starting next month I would bet that it will have to be the new Congress that holds the conformation hearing on Dr. Gates.

I think it will be the old one. The Old Senate comes back for a lame-duck session at the end of the month.

I believe because they have to hold conformation hearings it will be the new senate.
