Instructions
STEP 1: Eliminate habitat. Snakes require heat to digest their food. Dry, rocky locations are havens to most kinds of snakes. Be aware when walking near wood piles and large, flat areas of concrete. STEP 2: Remove hiding places. Snakes are shy creatures. When not hunting, snakes will hide in wood piles, among flower pots and under garden debris. STEP 3: Keep rodents under control. A hungry snake searching for food will follow its stomach. To control rodents keep pet food indoors, garbage cans tightly sealed and vegetable gardens harvested. STEP 4: Erect snake proof fencing around your garden. A low fence only 2 to 3 feet high and made of fine wire mesh will prevent snakes from entering. Overall Tips & Warnings
Commercial snake repellants have been proven to be useless.
Call in professional animal control firms or your local animal control office to remove unwanted snakes from your property.
Do not handle snakes unless you know exactly what variety you are dealing with. Even baby rattlesnakes are extremely dangerous.

If you have a lot of snakes, then you have a lot of rodents around to feed them. Take care of your rodent problem because until you do more snakes are just going to migrate to the area and replace the ones you get rid of.
Also? Grow a d*mn spine, you're a big human being, they're a tiny, harmless snake. The snake has more place there than your bumbling self. Being scared of non-venomous snakes is STUPID, so stop being stupid. It's a worm that eats rats, how is that a bad thing? It's not, the problem is you, so get over it.

This is just the time of year for them. As the weather turns cooler, they look for someplace warmer.

We have a black snake living in a planter; I've found 3 copperheads this fall, 2 in the house, 1 in my car.

We're not snake lovers by any means, but we've just come to accept them as part of the country living deal. The dogs don't fool with them other than to bark and point them out. The cat kills the smaller ones. Not very attractive, but pretty effective.:-)

I agree with RM.. get a cat.

have 1 outside cat, lived in the same house 20 years, have seen only 2 snakes in that time frame. been told that snake sense the cats presents and stay way, they compete for the same food source (mice).

But yourself a cat! And as soon as you stop seeing them go down to your local Walmart or Agri Supply and buy you some sulfur and place a line around your home! It will keep them out but don't put it down until you get rid of the ones you have!

It smells bad but works... crush up some mothballs and put them all around the outside of your house... It worked for me.
