Give your two week notice if possible. If you need to quit immediately tell them you need quit now, due to unforeseen personal problems. They do not need any other reason and you are not obligated to give them any.

They are not allowed to withhold your paycheck or money that you have already earned, and you do not owe them anything unless you signed a contract saying otherwise when you started your job.

Write a brief, polite letter of resignation indicating that you are terminating employment with this company and on what day, or immediately if that is the case. You don't say what company or industry you are employed with or what state you are employed in. Typically, it is considered good manners to give two weeks notice, and most employers will not require you to stay on because they fear that you may sabotage the company or not do a good job in that duration. Depending on what state you live in, employment may be considered "at will" which means that you and your employer have the right to terminate employment at any time for any reason. Search online to see if your state is "at will". If it is not, you may be required to give a reason. If so, be polite, say that you are pursuing other employement or educational opportunies, or that your resignation is due to personal reasons. This is not a time to slam the company or anyone there. If you have constructive criticism or complaints about the company and/or co-workers, ask for an exit interview AFTER you receive your last paycheck and all benefits you are entitled to. If I were you, I would strongly consider whether or not to quit unless you have another offer on the table, searching for a job is a job! Good luck!

"Thank you for the opportunities provided to me during my employment here. I regret to inform you that I have decided to accept other employment (or go back to school and further my education, or seek other employment, or whatever the case is.)
I am offering (insert time period...usually two weeks) notice, and my last day of work will be (insert date.)"
Be sure to do this in writing, but stand there after you hand it in so you are available to answer any questions and it's not like you wrote it in order to avoid discussing it.
If you're not offering any notice, at least say in there, "I regret that I am unable to offer any notice. My resignation is effective immediately."
Be as professional as possible during this. Never burn bridges, even with places that don't deserve your courtesy. You never, ever, ever know when it can come back to haunt you ... especially in the business world, because everybody is somehow linked to everybody else, and word gets around.

Well, first, slap yourself in the back of your head for quitting a job that paid THAT much money. Probably, though, if it paid that much money, it was a VERY complicated job that you simply could not handle. Now, age 28? Sheesh. You have got a LOOOONGGGG life ahead of you. You will get a lot more jobs in your life. What to do, right now; go to every employment agency in town and fill out the applications, take the tests, and take any job they offer you; part time OR full time. Keeping working will keep your dignity and your sanity. After a while, someone will like your work and hire you into fulltime again. Especially with your experience and knowledge. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Give a reasonable notice to your employer. He may pay you and send you on your way, no sense in burning a bridge.

Put it in writing. Give 2 weeks notice (at the least). Give the notice to your boss. You do not have to give a reason unless you want to. Just don't burn any bridges.
