The bbc do a brilliant online course for free
It's got 10 components each one ending in a quiz. It's very well done and fun as well as a good source of information about the basics. There is a jargon buster section also.

there are hundards of site fourms online whihc teach the basic to advance topics on pc just search and you should be able to find many sites

Try "Internet for Dummies." I suggest you go to www.amazon.com and look for used books. I have purchased many this way and saved a lot of money. Also, all books I have received so far have been like new.

Buy computeractive magazine, its really good advice for beginners and pretty cheap too, I think its only a pound or so.
