The Scots are brought up to call themselves Scots
The Welsh are brought up to call themselves Welsh
The Irish are brought up to call themselves Irish
The English are brought up to call themselves British.
So to the rest of them British is a synonym of English and so is hated.

Do you understand the difference between English and British factually? English people are the people of England. British people are the people of the United Kingdom i.e. England, Scotland, Wales & N.Ireland. I kind of get you. Englishness has different connotations to the British. Britishness has connotations conservativeness (is that a word?) patriotism and the royal family and, well, poshness. Englishness is more realistic. Is that what you meant?

English people come from East Anglia and they were conquered by the Danes. Saxons are in the south but we got conquered by the Normans (who were Vikings). Brits (Romanised) got taken over by the Saxons and some were killed, but the Welsh fled to Wales.

But everybody mated with each other and mostly now it is a mixture of peoples.

I think British is a nationality, it's the place you were born. Englishman is an attitude. God save the queen, stiff upper lip, watching cricket, carrying a bowler and an umbrella THAT'S an Englishman.

Englishness now means the total a-holes following a football team bringing "britain" down. Also the ambassadors - the royals - being the stereotypical dysfunctional family where de-sensitisation of your being is accepted. glad i'm scottish!
