All new gas fired appliances have a curing time when new. Some will require longer initial burn times than others. In most cases open a few windows and run the appliance on its highest setting for at least 45 minutes. If this is a wall mounted radiant heater or blue flame heater that should be enough. If its logs then they typically call for an initial run time of 90 minutes. The initial smoke that burns off is what sets off the smoke alarm. That should clear up fairly quickly but the stink will take a bit longer. In some cases even after the burn off an unvented appliance will give off some odors during use.

It's just the coating they put on the unit to prevent corrosion before they can sell it and get it installed. It should wear off soon. If it's still bad in a couple of weeks, call the installer back to check.
