The two best I can recommend are The Descent and 28 Days Later, with the latter being the better mix of drama and horror (and the better movie).

I'd definitely say Panic Room and Pan's Labyrinth, watched the latter two days ago, it left me breathless although it doesn't necessarily fit your cathegory since it's more of a fantasy-horror movie. Try Darkness too, the spanish horror-drama from 2000 I think. If you're looking for Historical Drama/Horror try "Le Pacte des Loups", a french movie on the famous beast from the Gévaudan.
