i believe he was looking for India. that's why native people are called Indians

india. i'm pretty sure he was trying to find a better way. a lot of spices (big deal, the spice trade) came from india and i think the route to india was kind of perilous. i think he was looking for a better way by going the other way. and, yes, that's why the native americans were known as indians, he thought he was in india.

but that's just a guess. i really don't remember....

I believe he was trying to find a shorter trade route to India..and bumped into american instead.
