It's because they tried to conquer Canada and Mexico in the past, they just never got over the fact that the whole continent isn't theirs.

On the world stage if you go over seas and you're from ANY north american or south american country they call you american whether you're from canada or usa or mexico, or Brazil or Argentina just for a few examples.
But when you are in the western hespmesphire (AMERICAS) we go by after what country we come from so lets say an man from the usa comes to canada they call him american, or if a man from the usa goes to brazil they call him american or if man from canada goes to the usa they call him canadian.

it relatively is an idiomatic mistake that has remained, and that the U. S. by using its way of existence has pushed distant places (to different continents like Asia or Africa). when I holiday in Latin usa I continually hear that *****, because of the fact there they call us Estadounidenses or North human beings (this is likewise no longer spectacular, yet possibly greater spectacular than American). i do no longer think of that maximum US voters think of that they are greater suitable, it relatively is basically an abbreviation from usa. additionally it comes from the Italian cartographer Amerigo Vespussi who made a map of South usa and quite of powerful usa. interpreting a number of the responses right here make me unhappy to make certain what share youngsters do no longer even understand this common piece of historic information, this is extremely unhappy certainly

i have done a lot of travelling and this does come up frequently.
if i travel to asia or africa and say i'm an american or from the us
of a, it is generally understood where i come from. the major area
of complaint comes when you travel to south or central america,
where many of those countries are also united states and in the americas, there i have found it polite to say i'm north american,
a yankee or north american and of the usa...what can i say we live in a complex world. point is..BE POLITE..goes along way anywhere

Ummm... you do realize that the A in USA means America! Thats why. How about YOU just correct those people you are talking to as you see fit. Just because someone may assume you're talking about the US, does not mean we need to change anything for you.

maybe it's you who needs to change what you are saying. If your from N. America say you're canadien. S. America- Brazilian. Central America -Costa Rican - you get my point.
Why would you say America rather then your country, anyway? Are you embarassed or something? Who says their continent rather then their country?
