Tijuana is right on the border.

There is a system of toll roads that make going further in easier and faster, but you'll have to do a lot of driving since it's a long way to the center. Also the in nortern part of Mexico, you'll see a whole lot of nothing. If you are going alone, driving will end up being very expensive. You'll need to get Mexican auto insurance and pay for the toll highways.

Flying to the center and using the excellent bus system may be a better idea.

There are buses directly from the Mexico City airport to five other cities enabling you to make a loop trip and not have to stay in Mexico City twice.

I live up in Chicago and have been to Mexico every freaking way (except by train). From Chicago to the Nuevo Laredo border its about 18hrs. I usually stop in Houston to sleep. From the border to Mexico City its about 8-10 hrs depending on what you're driving and how fast you go.
