At some risk of oversimplification, put the transmission selector in the "D" for "Drive" and forget about it. If you do this, the transmission starts in the lowest gear and in a series of shifts arrives at the highest gear entirely on its own. The "3" or "2" or "1" are there in case you wish to override the transmission shifts and keep it in a lower gear. Drivers seldom use this override feature and then only for a specific situation.

Although most automatics have four gear ratios, it could vary from 2 to 8.

You have the different gears for different driving conditions. for normal every day driving you will almost always use D. the other 1-D gears are for other needs. For example. your going down a steep grade and you are using your brakes a lot. down shifting in to a lower gear will help to reduce your speed and give you better control. If your teaching a teenager how to drive you put it in first and they are limited to 35 miles per hour (Most cars) so it just depends on what your doing.

Drive or overdrive is for highway driving.
3 rd gear is for city driving with alot of starts & stops
1st and second are for slow speeds hauling a load.
The less your car changes gears the more fuel efficient it will be.
